Malaysian firms ‘to invest in design’

miff2Malaysian furniture manufacturers are ready to invest in design, rather than simply rely on low production costs to appeal to retailers.

‘Buyers at this year’s show told me that they see some new designs but it is not enough,’ says Tan Chin Huat, Malaysian International Furniture Fair md. ‘The process has been slow but surely, Malaysian manufacturers are coming around to accept that next to quality, they need to invest in design.’

He says manufacturers will also be driven to step up because for many of them, MIFF is their main source for their business.

Next year’s 6-10 March event will cover 75,000sqm at the Putra World Trade Centre and Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur. ‘Even before the close of MIFF 2011, exhibitors want to book space in advance for 2012. This is a good sign of their enthusiasm for the next show.’
