End is nigh for TJ Hughes

Almost a century of retailing history looks certain to end after the majority of staff at TJ Hughes’ central distribution centre were made redundant this afternoon.
Some 80 of the centre’s 95 staff were told at lunchtime by administrator Ernst & Young that they being made redundant with immediate effect. The remaining staff are expected to lose their jobs next week once the final items of stock are shipped to stores, where clearance sales are being run by GA Europe.
Ernst & Young was appointed on 30 June after continuing losses and a drop in sales. The chain was founded in Liverpool by Thomas J Hughes in 1912.
