Retail sales grew at its fastest rate for a decade in April
UK retail sales climbed by 6.9% in April compared with 2013 same month a year earlier, the largest increase since March 2004.
The Office for National Statistics also said retail sales rose by 1.3% between March and April, higher than expected.
Food sales during the late Easter holiday made a significant contribution to the overall figure, the ONS said. They were 6.3% higher in April against a year earlier, and 3.6% up on March.
Non-food sales rose by 6.5% compared with a year earlier, but were down 0.4% on the month.
Quarterly retail sales have now grown for 14 months in a row.
