Dark calls time on 150 years of trading
After more than 150 years, Somerset independent furniture and flooring retailer Challicoms is to close in September.
Ted Dark, owner of the Clevedon store is retiring and will close the business to new customers at the end of the month before closing in September.
'I am sad we are closing, but I have to retire sometime. We have four children and none of them wanted to take over the business, as they all have their own careers. We will be running the sale until the end of June, when we will close the shop, but we will be here until the end of September to deal with orders and service our customers. It will be a sad day when we finally close, but life goes on. I will miss all the wonderful customers and staff,' Dark told the Western Daily Press.
The company was founded by CE Challicom in 1858 as Clevedon Depository and House Furnishers. In 1949 Dark's father Victor bought the business. Ted joined in 1971, becoming md and chairman in 1987 before buying the business 20 years ago.
The store's four full-time and four part-time members of staff have been made redundant.
The 10,000sqft Hill Road store will be put up for sale after September.
