Carpets and upholstery help push inflation lower
Interiors inflation saw a major drop in May, with significantly lower prices rises than in 2013.
Furniture and furnishing inflation fell from 1.7% to 0.8% while flooring inflation dropped from 1.8% to 1.2%.
'Furniture and furnishings prices overall rose this year by less than a year ago, with the main downward contributions coming from tufted carpets, leather sofas and upholstered armchairs. [This was] partially offset by a small upward contribution from bookcases/freestanding shelving units, where prices overall rose this year by more than a year ago,' says the Office for National Statistics.
In household textiles, the annual inflation rate fell from 2.2% to 0.5%, thanks largely to prices of curtains rising slower than last year.
The falls helped overall inflation drop from 1.8% to 1.5%, as measured by the Consumer Prices Index.
