Sunshine hits furniture sales at John Lewis
Last week was a week of two halves for John Lewis as the good weather in the latter half of the week kept shoppers away.
'The start of the summer heat certainly led to a week of two halves, with strong sales during the early part of the week and trade slowing as the sun started to make an appearance in the latter end of the week, finishing in a 4.6% increase on last year,' says Barry Matheson John Lewis retail services director.
'The footfall into shops was slightly slower than previous weeks, but High Wycombe once again led the way on the increases, delivering a sales growth of 21% on last year with Tamworth not far behind at 20% up. Some of our smaller shops - Chichester, Knight & Lee and Newbury - also delivered good sales increases at 10%, 8% and 6% respectively. Online had a particularly good week, with sales growing 21% on last year. Click & collect was the facility of choice for customers, with a 46% increase in sales.
'The weather also prompted strong growth in outdoor living, picnic and barbecue assortments in home, with slower sales on furniture towards the end of the week balancing out to deliver -1.4% on last year.' Home sales for the 20 week period were up by 6.3%.
