Home and Christmas drive John Lewis to double-digit growth
John Lewis continued its run of strong homewares performances, helping the department and home store chain to a 12.9% sales increase last week.
'Both shops and online had good increases. In shops the best performances were from Chichester (24.4%), Poole (23.4%), High Wycombe (18.1%), Ipswich (18.1%) and Chester (17.5%). Online sales continue to be strong (up 31.2%), along with good traffic conversion,' says Tim Harrison John Lewis store development director.
'The best assortment growth came from the home directorate, up 15%. Sales of big-ticket items were well supported by both pick-up and gifting. Christmas shop was up 13% after a successful launch. As the nights are drawing in, lighting has seen a 16% increase.
'The week has seen a solid increase in sales as the cooler weather starts to have a positive impact across all directorates. The start of the week was particularly strong, with sales softening slightly as we approached the weekend.
The milder weather does look to be finally turning and both bricks and clicks are prepared for the seasonal assortment. As the early schools break for half term this week we begin the climb to Christmas.'
Sales in the week to 11 October were £80.59m and were 9.1% higher in the 11 week period.
