Carpet Recycling UK Awards
Carpet Recycling UK held its second annual awards ceremony in Birmingham a few weeks ago to highlight the achievements its members have made, namely in innovation, commitment and practice.
The ‘Recycler of the Year’ category – extremely competitive this year and celebrating individuals who have developed new systems to recycle carpet waste – was won by Neville Hinchliffe of Arighi Bianchi (Pictured Left). The flooring and furniture retailer has saved £5000 per annum through diverting its waste from landfills and implementing a ‘zero to landfill’ policy.
‘Reuse Member of the Year’ – for demonstrating successful reuse of carpet tiles from other projects - went to Greenstream Flooring who, in 2014, managed to redirect in excess of 500 tonnes of carpet tiles from landfill sites. This led to a series of major social and environmental benefits which helped improve the community where they operate.
Designer Contracts Ltd won the ‘Take Back Partner of the Year award, which celebrates a distributor, flooring contractor or retailer who works in partnership with the carpet supply chain to reuse off-cuts. They achieved a 90% diversion rate by rerouting more than 250 tonnes of carpet off-cuts from landfills. They were also rated as highly commended in the overall ‘Recycler of the Year’ category.
The ‘Recycling Champion’ category focuses on an individual or company who have shown commitment to setting up systems and processes that increase overall carpet recycling. It was won by Mid UK Recycling who, last year, processed near to 20,000 tonnes of material using sophisticated recycling techniques they recently developed.
