Ikea begins work on first UK store for seven years
Construction has begun on Ikea’s first UK store for seven years.
Johanna Heuren, Ikea Reading store manager; Gordon Lundie, the leader of West Berkshire Council, and Quintin Webb West Berkshire Council deputy chairman yesterday cemented a steel column at the entrance of the Calcot, Reading store.
Construction work is expected to be completed in the spring before opening in the summer. It will create 350 jobs.
The store will be a fifth smaller than original planned. The chain had planning permission for a 430,400sqft three storey branch but reduced this to a two storey 344,320sqft unit last year.
Ikea is paying about £5m for road improvements around the store.
