Weather lifts JL as furniture gets third double-digit rise

JLSmartFor the third successive week John Lewis achieved a double-digit increase in furniture sales as good weather and a Bank Holiday helped the chain to a major sales rise.

After recording increases of 15.8% and 21.7%, the chain saw furniture sales jump by 13.7% in the week to 7 May.
‘We finished the week with total sales of £81.0m, up 11.6% on last year. In a week defined by the changeable weather, all three product areas had a strong performance, and Bank Holiday Monday in particular drove trade,’ says Alison Smith, John Lewis head of foodservice.
‘Home sales were up 10.3% year-on-year with outdoor living the star performer, up 110% on last year, as customers made the most of being outside in the sun. Home accessories and gifts were up 27.8% and furniture had a good week up 13.7%.
‘Fashion had a good week up 13.4% on last year, with many customers buying warm weather products. Women’s accessories were up 16.8% with sunglasses and sandals selling particularly well. It was a great week for beauty too, with fragrance 23.8% higher.
‘EHT had a strong week with sales up 11.9% on last year. The warm weather had a positive impact on sales, with cooling products up 48.0%. Tablets and computing had a strong week too, with sales 24.3% higher.’
