Weather and weddings lift John Lewis

JLSalsaJohn Lewis recorded another increase in home sales last week, helped by the weather and weddings.

‘Customers were getting into the swing of summer last week, with evidence that spending time outside and preparing for the height of wedding season were the top trends driving sales. Total sales were £83.1m, up 3.8% on last year,’ says Andy Street, John Lewis md.
‘Fashion was the strongest performing category, finishing the week +8.7%. Women's formalwear saw a big 45.3% increase in sales, suggesting that summer weddings may be prompting a wardrobe shake-up. Women's shoes were +11.5% and accessories +6.4%, hinting that many ladies were keen to complete the look.
‘Home sales were up 1.8% and the wedding guest theme could also be seen here, with gift wrap sales soaring 135.5%. Outdoor living was the other star performer, finishing the week at up 46.6%, demonstrating customers' intent to capitalise on the improving weather forecast ahead of last weekend.’
Home sales for the 24 week period were 4.8% higher.
