Furniture sales rise at John Lewis again
John Lewis recorded another increase in furniture sales last week, but it was not enough to lift overall home sales as the hot weather continued to affect sales.
‘In a week which was on average five degrees warmer than the same week last year, sales were £87.5m, up 0.8% on the year,’ says Maggie Porteous,
John Lewis shop trade director.
‘In home, sales were down -1.9% [in the week to 3 September], although furniture continued its strong run-rate at plus 4.3%. Our own-brand ranges continue to show real strength, with House [pictured] performing incredibly well on the back of a promotion, and our latest range, Design Project, also posting a strong week for sales.’
‘With the warmer weather continuing to affect sales, fashion sales were just down on last year at -0.9%. Childrenswear, nursery and haberdashery was up 7.1% with back-to-school sales boosting our numbers. EHT sales were up 5.5%. Mobile phone sales continue to be a key driver.’
Home sales for the five week period were up 0.1%.
