Unilin looks to Brazil
Fresh from displacing the UK as the world's sixth largest economy, Brazil is to gain an Unilin manufacturing plant producing Quick-Step laminate.
The flooring group has agreed a joint venture with forestry company Arauco which will see it invest in Arauco's laminate factory in Pien and sell laminate under the Quick-Step and Floorest brands with HDF supplied by Arauco.
Arauco owns more than a million hectares of forest in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay and produces 3.2million cubic metres of wood base panels.
Unilin follows a growing number of companies setting up manufacturing facilities in Brazil, allowing them to avoid the country's high import duties.
'Together, Arauco and Unilin will create the most innovative and comprehensive laminate flooring product offering for the emerging Brazilian market. We are partnering with a global leader in sustainable forest products, and this provides us with a solid base on which to build and a very complimentary asset base from which to source HDF,' says Paul De Cock, Unilin flooring division president.
