John Lewis sales down, but Upholstery was up 2.1%
Total sales for the week were down 0.3% on last year. This is in part due to the annualising of the first May bank holiday, which was a week earlier last year.
Fashion was up 2.0%, with womenswear and menswear both seeing sales rise by 8.2%. The sunny weather at the start of the week encouraged customers to update their summer wardrobes with warm weather clothing up 18%. Our own label denim lifestyle brand, AND/OR, was also a particular standout last week (+60%) and womens shoes had a record week, with sales up 30%.
Home sales were down 1.6%, although outdoor living saw a second consecutive week of strong performance driven by the weather and low tog duvets also performed well. Upholstery saw an uplift of 2.1% with new products driving sales.
EHT sales were down 1.9%. However the warm weather prompted sales of DIY technology products as customers get their garden ready for the summer season. Vision also had a good week, supported by new television launches and there were strong sales in fans and vacuum cleaners.
