Home suffers in the heat at John Lewis

John Lewis home sales again suffered in the hot weather, although the chain returned to growth in the past week.

‘Home sales were down 6.3% [in the week to 21 July]. However, hydration products were up 30% and summer party products were up 13%’, said Craig Inglis, John Lewis
customer director.

‘Total sales for the week were up 0.7%. Fashion sales were up 4.5% and womenswear in particular had a good week with sales up 7.4% on last year. This was driven by success in our own brand ranges, up 12% overall, with a standout performance from Kin, up 49%.

‘Electricals and home technology sales were up 4.9%, with small electricals having another good week, led by strong sales in fans and air purifiers as the hot weather continues. Mobile phones, photo and wearable tech products also performed well.’

Home sales for the 25 week period are down 4%.
