Outdoor sales leap but home sales fall at John Lewis

Fans, outdoor furniture and beach towels were among the best performing products at John Lewis last week as home sales fell again.

‘Total sales were down 2.2%, with the continued heatwave last week impacting sales [in the week to 28 July], said Liz Mihell, John Lewis
head of shop trade, London and south-east.

‘Home sales were down 7.8%, although outdoor living had a particularly strong week with sales up 50%. Bathshop also had a good week, driven by sales of towels, with beach towels in particular up 28%.

‘Electricals and home technology sales were up 3.9%. Small electricals continue to perform exceptionally well, with air purifiers, fans, and humidifiers all seeing triple digit sales growth. Elsewhere, mobile had a strong week and accessories also performed well driven by earphones and own brand products.

‘Fashion sales were down 2.0%. However, warm weather clothing continued to perform well due to the consistent high temperatures, with sales up 29% on last year. Menswear also had a good week, up 2.1%.’

Home sales for the 26 week period are down 4.2%.

Sister chain Waitrose reported large sales increases in barbecue meat, prepared salads and melons while sales of gin were up by 45% and cider by 49%.
