Easter disrupts John Lewis sales
The timing of Easter and the hot weather hit sales at John Lewis in the past week.
‘Total sales for the week were down 5.3% as the majority of our shops were closed on Easter Sunday and warm weather during the Bank Holiday affected footfall,’ says Johnathan Marsh, John Lewis home buying director.
‘Fashion sales were down 9.5% as last year we were matching competitor promotional activity. However areas of womenswear accessories performed well with customers buying sunglasses and summer shoes. The John Lewis & Partners sunshine yellow trench coat also proved very popular, with sales up 89% on the week before.
‘Home sales were down 6.8% however cookware was up 6% as customers enjoyed shopping Easter promotions.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 1.5% with communication technology performing particularly well, up 6%, and small electrical products also popular, up 15.8% with strong demand for the Dyson Air Wrap.'
Home sales for the 13 week period were down 5.1%.
