Weekend helps John Lewis avoid double-digit home fall
John Lewis suffered a near double-digit fall in home sales in the past week but the position would have been a lot worse if it had not been for performance over the Bank Holiday weekend.
‘Home sales were down 9.1%, however performance over the Bank Holiday weekend was much stronger than earlier in the week and particularly good given we were annualising promotional activity and a Partnership Card double points event last year. Bedroom furniture and upholstery in particular performed well,’ says Bérangère Michel, John Lewis operations director.
‘Total sales for the week [to 4 May] were down 2.6% as we annualised price matching a competitor event last year. However, we had a strong Bank Holiday weekend, with the cooler weather driving footfall to our shops compared to the very hot weather on the same weekend last year.
‘Fashion sales were down 2.1% as last year we were matching competitor promotional activity. This year, promotional activity in beauty and women's Accessories performed particularly well.
‘Electrical and home technology sales were up 1.7%. We saw good sales of the newly launched John Lewis & Partners’ US style fridge freezer and of new TV products, including the LG C9 4K Ultra HD Smart TV and pre-orders of the Sony Bravia AG9 Ultra HD Smart Android TV.’
Home sales for the 14 week period were down 5.4%.
