Home sales dip despite bedding surge for John Lewis
John Lewis narrowly missed a return to growth in home sales in the past week.
‘Home sales were down 0.3% with premium bedding up 22% driven by customers investing in new sheets and pillowcases to upgrade their bedrooms. Gift food, stationery and gifts were down as last year saw an uplift around the Royal Wedding,’ says Simon Coble, John Lewis trading director.
'Total sales for the week [to 18 May] were up 1.7% with strong performance in shops over the weekend as we annualised the impact of the Royal Wedding weekend last year.
‘Fashion sales were up 5.8% with beauty sales up 9.5% due to competitor price matching. Warm weather products however were down 9% due to the cooler temperatures compared to the same week last year.
Electrical and home technology sales were down 2.2%.’
Home sales for the 16 week period were down 4.9%. Total sales were down 2.6%.
