John Lewis takes Bank Holiday hit
John Lewis saw a major drop on sales over the past week, including a double-digit fall in home sales, as shoppers preferred to enjoy the weather.
'Total sales were down 7.2% [in the week to 31 August] last year as warm weather over the Bank Holiday weekend impacted trade,’ says David Hunn, John Lewis technology products and change director.
‘Home sales were down 14% but the warm temperatures saw sales of BBQs up 40% and outdoor furniture was up 20% as customers continued to make the most of their outdoor areas.
Fashion sales were down 5.8%, however schoolwear sales picked up towards the end of the week as parents prepared for the start of a new school term.
Electrical and home technology sales were down 2.8%, however sales of large electricals were up 8.6%, driven by cooking which saw sales up 29%.’
