The Office for National Statistics has revealed that households spent just £717.60 a year on furniture, flooring and furnishings last year.

Its Family Spending report found that in households where the main householder was under 30, £618.80 was spent on furniture and furnishings and £104 on flooring. For those aged 30 to 40 the figures were £696.80 and £208; for those between 50 and 64 they were £561.60 and £182; for those aged 65 to 74 they were £421.20 and £124.80 and for those 75 and over they were £234 and £88.40.

If the figures are broken down by income bracket, each 10% of households spend (lowest first): £202.80 and £93.60; £161.20 and £62.40; £291.20 and £114.40; £369.20 and £161.20; £499.20 and £135.20; £603.20 and £156; £670.8 and £161.20; £743.60 and £161.20; £743.6 and £119.60; £816.40 and £254.8; £1,196 and £369.20.
